The Mahdia corniche became the first ecological beach in Tunisia.

The Corniche beach in Mahdia has become the first ecological beach in Tunisia. The announcement was made on “European Cooperation Day”, celebrated in Tunisia on Saturday, October 1, 2022, as part of the activities of Med Dé.Co.U.Plages, a cross-border project between Italy and Tunisia, co-financed by the European Union.

According to the coordinator of the project, which began in 2020 and will run until 2023, Mahdia beach was chosen from 162 applications to obtain the “Ecological Beach” label, thanks to the notable evolution observed in practices relating to environmental protection.

The day’s activities included a visit to the town’s remains, a campaign to clean up the seabed and workshops on the theme of the “Ecological Label”.

The program for this project, co-financed by the EU to the tune of 1.2 MD, also includes a theatrical show, choreography, a photographic exhibition and a bicycle parade for young cyclists organized under the slogan “Bicycles for Peace”.

The role of ecotourism in the new strategic vision for Tunisian tourism by 2035.

An examination of the main lines of the national strategic vision for Tunisian tourism up to 2035 was the focus of a meeting at La Kasbah between the Head of Government, Najla Bouden, and the Minister of Tourism, Mohamed Moez Belhassine, on the occasion of the celebration of International Tourism Day on the theme “Rethinking tourism”.

The Tourism Minister stressed that this vision aims to make tourism an important driver of economic, social and environmental development throughout Tunisia by 2035.

The aim is to make Tunisia one of the most competitive and sustainable destinations in the world, by diversifying its tourism products and attracting new markets, according to a press release issued by the Government Presidency.

In addition, the aim is to establish Tunisia as a clean tourist destination that preserves its cultural and natural heritage for present and future generations, he added, stressing that this strategy is a shared vision between the various players in the tourism sector.

For his part, Bouden noted that the tourism sector must create wealth, help promote the economy and create more jobs, recalling the government’s support for the sector, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

USAID supports Tunisian travel agencies to develop alternative tourism

The Tunisian Federation of Travel and Tourism Agencies (FTAV) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a memorandum of understanding in Tunis on Monday, September 12, 2022, to boost alternative tourism in Tunisia.

The memorandum is part of FTAV’s efforts to promote alternative tourism, which enables foreign tourists to take advantage of the benefits of “environment-friendly” ecological tourism, said Federation President Ahmed Ben Taïeb.

He also believes it is important to develop the financing mechanisms used in the alternative tourism sector, which has suffered a number of difficulties due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

For her part, USAID’s representative in Tunisia, Leila Calnan, emphasized that her agency, through this memorandum, would be working to reinforce FTAV’s efforts to promote the alternative tourism sector, all the more so as this sector constitutes a driving force for sustainable development.
